VERSUS MODE · ROUND 3

Alfred vs Shlexball

Alfred is the power user’s launcher: a hotkey, a box and years of polish. For finding documents it still needs the right words. Shlexball needs only a description.

The short answer

Alfred and Shlexball do different jobs, and many people will want both. Alfred launches apps, runs workflows and finds a file by name faster than anything else on a Mac. Shlexball finds the document you can describe but cannot name. Alfred matches words. Shlexball, with a language model running on your Mac, works out what you meant.

How Alfred finds files

Alfred’s file search has three keywords. open (or a leading space) finds files by name, find reveals them in Finder, and in searches inside file contents. Results come from the metadata index macOS keeps for Spotlight, so Alfred is fast and sees what Spotlight sees.

That is also its limit. in q4 priorities asks the same index for files that contain those words, the question that gave Spotlight a content index and two JSON exports in round 1. Alfred shows the answer sooner and more neatly. It is still the same answer.

Workflows do not add understanding

Alfred’s paid Powerpack adds workflows, clipboard history, snippets and custom file filters. A workflow can narrow a search to PDFs in one folder, or hand a query to another app. What it cannot do is decide that “what to tackle first this quarter” and “Q4 priorities” are the same request. Every filter still needs you to supply the words the file contains.

What Shlexball does instead

Shlexball reads the request, widens it by meaning and ranks the results by fit. Each card previews the passage that matched, and Search details shows the exact read-only command Shlexball ran.

Why local matters

Shlexball’s model is downloaded once and runs on your Mac’s Apple silicon. Your documents are read on your Mac and stay there, searches work offline after setup, and Shlexball only reads: it never changes, moves or deletes a file.

Where Alfred still wins

Alfred is faster, lighter and does far more than find files: it launches apps, runs custom workflows, remembers your clipboard and expands text snippets. It runs on older and Intel Macs, and the Powerpack is a one-time purchase. If you know a file’s name, Alfred will open it before Shlexball has finished reading your request. Keep Alfred for all of that; call Shlexball when the words have gone.

Try the same search

Pick a document you can describe but cannot name. Look for it with Alfred, then ask Shlexball. The first 30 searches are free and need no account.
