REVIEW · FILE MANAGER
Verdict: The PRO Pack is worth 29.99 USD if you move files between your Mac, cloud services, servers and phones every day: Commander One puts them all in two panes with tabs, archives and encryption. As a search tool it is a solid file manager search with regular expressions, not a way to find a document by what it is about.

Commander One is a file manager for the Mac built around the classic dual-pane layout: two folders side by side, so moving and comparing files is quick. Christian Ghisler, the maker of Total Commander, approved it as Total Commander for Mac.
It adds unlimited tabs, three view modes, multiple selection, an operations queue and several search methods, and it runs natively on Apple silicon and Intel Macs.
Its archiver compresses and extracts ZIP, RAR, 7Z, TAR and more, lets you browse archives like folders, and even edit a file inside an archive without unpacking it.
Commander One connects to cloud storage and remote servers and puts them next to your local folders: Amazon S3, Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, Backblaze B2, FTP and SFTP, WebDAV and more.
An encryption feature protects files you store online.
Connect an iPhone, iPad, Android phone or an MTP camera by USB and it appears as a mounted drive, so you can browse photos and media without copying them back and forth.
Commander One's advanced search covers local drives, cloud storage services, connected devices and even archives.
You can use regular expressions, a precise pattern language for matching names and text, and make searches case-sensitive for more accurate results.
The pages we read describe where and how it searches, not whether it reads the text inside documents, so check its user guide if content search matters to you. Quick preview lets you look at a file before opening it in its app.
The PRO Pack is a one-time payment, not a subscription. A Personal licence costs 29.99 USD for 1 Mac, and a Team licence costs 99.99 USD for 5 Macs; company licences for 50 or more Macs go through sales.
The licence type matters: the Personal licence is for personal, non-commercial and non-profit use, while the Team licence allows commercial use in a business.
You can add a Lifetime Upgrades Guarantee at checkout, and owners of a licence for competing software can ask for a 50% migration discount.
The Mac App Store version has some limitations compared with the PRO version from the website, and Commander One publishes a comparison in its user guide.
Buy it if your work involves servers, cloud buckets or phones as often as local folders. Commander One shows a 4.7 rating from 1103 user reviews, and reviewers at Macworld and Lifehacker praise its dual panes and server support.
If you mostly want to find documents, a file manager is the long way round; its search is strong on patterns, not on meaning.
Commander One searches by name and pattern. Shlexball finds a file from a plain-English description of what you remember, searching file and folder names and the text inside files, including PDFs and Word documents.
Shlexball is read-only and runs its language model on your Mac. The first 30 searches are free and need no account.
Shlexball finds a file by what it is about, no pattern needed: 30 free searches.
